How To Say “I Do” With A Song
Modern millennial brides and grooms love to stray from tradition to make their wedding day truly theirs, from handwritten invitations to DIY décor and more. If you’re planning on getting married soon, consider adding a personal touch to your wedding with an original song that brings your love story to life.
With everything you have to worry about when planning your wedding, we thought it’d be helpful to share some of our favorite ways to incorporate your personalized song into your special day with these stories inspired by some of our previous nuptial customers.
Your Wedding Website
Michael and his girlfriend Steph have always lived by the mantra “go big or go home,” so when the time came to propose to her, he got a song created for her featuring the words, “Will you marry me?” Of course she said yes, and as the planning began, they embedded their new love song onto their wedding website so their guests could hear their love story come to life as they prepared for the big day.
Bond the night before your big day
Cody and Hope have been dating since their senior years in college and always enjoyed very active social lives. Their nights were perpetually populated by friends, roommates and coworkers, so they cherish every moment of alone time that they can manage. On the night before their big day, away from all the guests, cuddled in the master bedroom of their destination wedding, Cody unveiled the custom song he got written for her. Finally alone and forever together, they relived their love story through song on the eve of the best day of their lives.
Send it with your morning note
When they first met in high school, Gabe would slip love poems into Desi’s locker in between classes. They didn’t start officially dating until years later when they reconnected online, but Gabe picked up their tradition and left hand-written love notes in her purse, lunchbox and coat pockets. On the morning of their wedding day, he asked his friend to deliver to Desi the Songfinch greeting card with the link to their Story Homepage printed inside. Thankfully, Gabe’s brother arrived just as Desi’s mom was about to put on her makeup, so the happy tears she shed while listening to the song could flow without worry.
As you walk down the aisle
Stephen and Nicole are normally the jokesters among their friends and family, known for their infamous Halloween costumes and White Elephant gifts. On their wedding day, their guests naturally anticipated the quirky couple to make light of the ceremony. To everyone’s tearful amazement, however, Nicole walked down the aisle to a heartfelt song that recreated their love story in a way neither of them could have ever said with a straight face. By the time she reached Stephen, they were both bawling – as was everyone else in the room, including the officiator.
As a part of the vows
Though he has the biggest heart among his friends, Benjamin’s sarcastic nature prevented him from getting through any heartfelt sentiment without cracking a joke. On his wedding day with his high school sweetheart Jordyn, his family and friends (and bride) anticipated his vows with bemusement. To a few chuckles, Benjamin gave the DJ a thumbs up. As soon as the first verse of their custom love song began, though, the laughs turned to awws as Benjamin was able to tell Jordyn how he really felt, sincerely and eternally.
Introduce your wedding party
Connor and Alisa are both salespeople with a friend’s group as great as their network. They live the same way the work – with open arms, easy smiles and lots of laughs. For their wedding day, they wanted to host a unique and fun time for everyone there, including the wedding party. A few weeks before the big day, Connor and Alisa sat down together to tell Songfinch their favorite memories of their bridesmaids and groomsmen to create a hilarious yet heartwarming hip-hop song. Alisa told us that every member of the wedding party is still rapping their verse.
Music always played a big role in Zach and Sarah’s seven-year-long relationship. In fact, their friends had a bet going on which of their favorite Doors songs they’d choose for their first dance song. Instead, they had shared with Songfinch a list of the things they love most about each other and got a one-of-a-kind song written just for them. They had kept it a secret the weeks leading up to the wedding day and practiced dancing to it in every night after work for a month. By the time they tied the knot, they were able to look each other in the eyes throughout the whole song as they danced a perfect waltz and whispered to each other every lyric.
As Renee and her oldest child stepped onto the dance floor for the mother-son dance of his wedding, the band announced she had gotten a song special for the moment. Renee had listened to the song so much, she was able to sing it to him as they were dancing. There was not a dry eye in the room – including her son.
When she began wedding planning, Angie knew she needed to do something unique for her father-daughter dance. Music has always been an influential part of her relationship with her dad, but she wasn’t in love with any of “their songs” that helped define their relationship. She told Songfinch all of their inside jokes, special memories and anything else she could think of that summed up her relationship with her dad and got a new song created just for him to add to their collection. When she debuted it to him on their wedding day, it brought him and everyone else to tears.
As a wedding speech at the reception
As two lifelong video gamers turned tax accountants, Nicolas and Justine sometimes struggle with public speaking. Both introverts from the suburbs, both middle children of hot-headed siblings, they are generally content to think how they feel rather than say it aloud. Despite all that, they wanted their wedding day to be a true declaration of their love and together worked on a powerful speech from the heart. To conclude their wedding speech at the reception, they played their custom song – an anthemic love ballad written just for them – and they started the first day to the rest of their lives in confidence together.
During the send-off
As the perfect ending to a perfect day, Darius and Candace asked the venue to play the custom love song they had written for their wedding day during the send-off after the reception. With their song playing through the outdoor speakers onto the church steps, Darius swept Candace into his arms and carried her through the throng of family and friends that crowded around them. Candace told us that as the chauffeur drove them away, she could hear the chorus through the open windows of the limousine until they were a block away and driving off into the sunset.
Wedding guest ‘thank yous’
Nelson and Franny got married in a small church in their hometown, surrounded by all the family and friends they had known all their life. It wasn’t until the morning after, as they woke up next to each on a plane flying into Puerto Rico for their honeymoon, that they realized they regretted not inviting anyone to join them on their adventure. They had shared so many adventures with their hometown friends, classmates, coworkers and more, and wanted that to continue into their marriage. So, as soon as they came home, they worked with Songfinch to get a song created as a ‘Thank You’ for all the family and friends who had made their big day magical – and every other day of their lives, too.
